A Forecasting Platform Participant Made $436K from Wagers Predicting Maduro's Downfall.
A trader profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader just before it was made public, sparking debate about whether someone profited from confidential information of American actions.
Changing Odds in Forecasts
Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the leader would be no longer in control by the end of January surged in the hours before President Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.
A single trader, which registered on the site recently and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32.5K.
It remains unclear. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Odds Fluctuate Before Announcement
Platform data shows that users estimated the likelihood of a political change at just under 7% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.
However these probabilities had climbed to over 10% by late Friday night and skyrocketed in the morning of the next day, suggesting a rapid movement in betting activity immediately prior to the public announcement was made.
"This specific wager has all the signs of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," said Dennis Kelleher.
Several of other platform users also profited significant sums from predicting the capture.
Legal Questions Grows
Politicians are beginning to pay attention.
Proposed legislation introduced on Monday seeks to ban federal workers from participating on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.
Market Background
Prediction markets have surged in popularity in recent years, with participants able to bet on everything from sports to current affairs.
This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. But it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.
Trading on insider information is illegal in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market space.
An official representative for a competing service said their site "explicitly prohibits insider trading of any form."
