Afghan Rulers Employed Left-Behind UK Equipment to Find Local Nationals That Served Alongside Allied Forces, Inquiry Learns

A confidential source has revealed an official investigation that British authorities abandoned classified devices permitting the militant group to identify Afghans who collaborated with western forces.

Information Leak Puts Thousands at Risk

Person A, identified as Person A, stated that individuals impacted by the information breach were told to relocate and switch their contact details to protect themselves from militant forces.

Members of Parliament are investigating official management of a serious breach of private information involving approximately 19k individuals who had requested to come to Britain to avoid the Taliban.

The Information Breach Occurred

A spreadsheet including confidential details, including names, contact details and sometimes relative details, was mistakenly released by a worker working at UK special forces headquarters in February 2022.

The leak came to light in late 2023, when identities of several individuals who had requested to settle in the UK appeared on Facebook.

Taliban Capabilities

It appears there is a misunderstanding that militant forces are without comparable resources that we have,” Person A informed MPs.

Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; they have it. If they have a contact number, they are able to track you down to within metres. This is exactly how intelligence groups did.”

Under inquiry about if militant forces had access to sophisticated technology, the whistleblower stated: “They possess all resources.”

Aftermath of the Information Leak

Preliminary research presented to the inquiry indicated that at least 49 kin and associates of individuals impacted by the breach had been killed.

A gag order regarding the leak was put in force in late 2023 and prevented all details regarding the matter from media reporting until recently.

Safety Measures

Because she was restricted, the whistleblower and the volunteer organization she was working with told affected households they were assisting that they had “apprehensions that somebody's phone had been intercepted”.

“We advised that they relocate where feasible and switched their mobile numbers. That constituted the crucial data that, should militant forces obtained this information, would result in identification and capture,” Person A explained.

Disputed Conclusions

The whistleblower contested that an official review conducted by a former official had been incorrect to state that the obtaining of the dataset by the regime was “minimally impact current risk levels”.

“The crucial point is that affected people are not confronting the authorities; they live secretly. All concerns relate to their previous employment.”

Person A described terrible violence endured by affected individuals, involving electric shock torture, waterboarding, and severe beatings.

“Instances include toddlers who have had bones crushed to force households to say where someone is,” Person A stated.
