The British designer Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer who crafted many legendary styles worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.

He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, most notably the soft-colored suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."

This news arrives less than a month after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London during the sixties to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to merge menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "true original," according to the UK's fashion authority.

In the 1990s, he started creating pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as a number of outfits for her American tour after assuming the title.

After a career spanning more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Dramatic Impact: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a authentic original whose legacy on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
