Condemnation Surges as Former President Trump's Post on Director Rob Reiner Spurs Sharp Rebuke
Individuals from both sides of the political aisle and the Hollywood industry are uniting to condemn Donald Trump for his statements in the wake of the shocking deaths of acclaimed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
An Inflammatory Online Post
Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Los Angeles residence, Trump took to his platform to label the deceased director as "tortured and struggling". The message, he claimed Reiner's death was "due to the anger he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and untreatable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Police Update and Arrest
Police have since announced the arrest of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in relation to the incident. It is reported his bond was established at a substantial sum.
A Wave of Criticism from Public Figures
The reaction to Trump's words was swift and harsh.
This is a disgusting and vile statement,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, also condemned the statements. She referenced prior rhetoric from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, demanding, "Have you no shame? Is it possible to get any worse?"
The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "He is a disturbed man."
Echoing this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a despicable piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just crossed a line. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own murder because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."
Rebuke from Within Political Ranks
Some GOP lawmakers also voiced disapproval.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". Greene also mentioned struggles with substance abuse and psychological well-being within families.
Fellow Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disgraceful" given the nature of the deaths. He publicly dared others in his political party to defend the comments.
The Director's History and Views on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. During a previous interview, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the dangers of authoritarian rule should Trump be reelected to power.
"There is autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States fall, there’s a danger that democratic systems crumble around the world."
Regardless of his pointed criticisms, Reiner had in the past expressed "complete revulsion" and denounced political violence unequivocally after the shooting of a different individual.
An Ironic Link: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of past connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once shared the story of the session, noting Trump's demand for "special hairspray" while posing on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
