Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment
Democratic officials expressed fury after Donald Trump charged a contingent of Democratic congress members of being "turncoats" and stated they should be detained and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their posting of a disputed video.
The Message That Provoked the Debate
The recorded message, released on earlier this week, includes six Democratic lawmakers who formerly served in military or intelligence positions.
"Similar to us, you all made an pledge to safeguard and support this constitution," the officials affirmed in the 90-second video. "At present, the dangers to our constitution aren't just from overseas, but from within our own country. Our regulations are clear, you can decline unlawful commands, you can refuse illegal orders, you should decline improper directives. No one has to follow directives that contravene the statutes or our founding principles."
Trump's Angry Reaction
The clip appeared to trigger a furious reply from the ex-president.
On later in the week, Trump published on Truth Social: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional publication, he stated: "This is really serious, and Harmful to our Country. Their statements cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent message, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Representatives Respond
Following Trump's comments on that day, Democratic leadership published a combined declaration censuring the remarks.
"Violent politics has no position in America," they stated. "Representatives who were featured in the video all worked our nation with tremendous loyalty and honor. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's offensive and harmful calls for execution against members of Congress, and urge GOP representatives to strongly do the same."
The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in communication with protective services "to ensure the safety of these members and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must immediately remove these unhinged online messages and withdraw his aggressive language before he leads to violence," the announcement added.
Officials' Defiant Response
The lawmakers who participated in the video also released a statement.
"We are veterans and national security professionals who care for this nation and swore an pledge to safeguard and uphold the national charter of the United States," they declared. "Our pledge is permanent, and we intend to honor it. No threat, pressure, or incitement will deter us from that fundamental duty."
"The significant point is that the ex-president considers it punishable by execution for us to repeat the statutes," they stated. "Armed forces members should recognize that we have their backs as they fulfill their oath to the national charter and duty to adhere to only proper directives. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."
They stated: "The entire nation must come together and censure the ex-president's demands for our death and partisan aggression. This is a time for principled stance."
Further Partisan Comments
The Democratic Senate minority leader also condemned Trump's comments and shared on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the former president is requesting the death of government members."
He added: "This represents an outright THREAT. All senators, all representatives, all citizens – regardless of party – should condemn this immediately and unconditionally."
The GOP leader supported Trump's allegation that the Democrats had participated in "rebellion", characterizing the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "This constitutes very risky, you have leading members of the legislature advising soldiers to defy commands, I think that represents historic in American history."
The Conservative representative also reportedly informed journalists that in what he reviewed of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the violation of treason" but that "attorneys have to analyze the terminology and determine all that."
Executive Branch Response
During a executive branch meeting on Thursday afternoon, when questioned by a media member, "Does the president want to execute elected officials?", the White House press secretary replied: "Absolutely not."
"It's important to note about what the president is responding to," the spokesperson said. "You have active officials of the American legislature who worked together to arrange a video message to individuals of the American armed forces, to current military personnel urging them to disobey the president's lawful orders."
She said: "The integrity of our armed forces rests on the hierarchy, and if that structure is violated, it can cause casualties, it can result in chaos, and precisely what these members of Congress ... are essentially supporting."
