The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
