Israelis have gathered throughout the country to remember two years since the Hamas-initiated attack on October 7th, 2023, as discussions proceeded in Egypt over an end to the war in Gaza.

The incident saw more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most most lethal day for Jews since the Holocaust.

Israel reacted by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are regarded as trustworthy by the UN and other international bodies.

"Our bloodthirsty opponents have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the leader added on that day.

He also pledged to "realize all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas regime and the assurance that Gaza will not present a risk to Israel".

Memorial Gatherings Across Israel

The national leadership rescheduled state remembrance events until October 16th - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still took place throughout the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas assault was organized in Tel Aviv. Arranged by the families themselves, it was broadcast across Israeli broadcast stations.

Some time earlier, a silent tribute was respected around the country.

Peace Discussions in Egypt

Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams met in the North African Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to examine the provisions of the proposal.

A high-ranking delegate knowledgeable about the negotiations said that an night meeting of indirect talks commenced at evening in Egypt.

The official stated the day's discussions ended without tangible results, amid differences over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not recommence hostilities after the initial stage of the agreement.

He added that the negotiations are "challenging and have yet to achieve any real breakthrough," but pointed out that intermediaries are striving to reduce the gaps between the both parties.

Key Points in Negotiations

  • A permanent truce
  • The trade of the prisoners still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
  • Plans for assistance deliveries
  • Post-war management of the territory

Citizen Reaction

In the city's memorial area earlier, 29-year-old a woman - whose brother lived through the incident on the gathering, where many attendees were lost their lives and many more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - shared: "No place appears as home anymore and until each abducted person are released none of us will have peace of mind."

"When we see everybody home once more, we can feel relief again. Then we can commence recover," she concluded.

Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in the capital, people assembled to express their solidarity for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel states nearly fifty stay in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be alive.

Demonstrator a participant explained: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement required for the hostages to return. But we truly desire promises that we will be safe."

Opinion polls now regularly indicate that approximately 70% of the population prefer the war to conclude in as payment for the release of the captives.

Palestinian Circumstances

At the location of Nova festival, those paying respects assembled to pay their respects.

From there, the sound of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people reported the heavy Israeli bombardment persisted.

In the urban center, attacks were reported in the early hours of Tuesday in the west side district, Rimal and Nasr districts and in the east side neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.

"As the night comes, the anxiety comes with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a mother, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli bombing last year, shared.

"My family are fearful of the air strikes. All the night we are resting together, holding each other, particularly my youngest child who rests his face on me the entire evening."

"Continuously we monitor the news to see developments. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the conflict will come back to us."

Medical Crisis

The healthcare center in Gaza City said it had accepted the corpses of several people by the midday, including a trio who died in an Israeli attack in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.

A different healthcare center in the south region of the city said another two dead people had been delivered. One of them was died by Israeli soldiers while seeking aid to the southern area, medics said.
