The Actress Fiona Shaw Talks About Her Career: From Andor to Harry Potter

In a recent interview, renowned actress Fiona Shaw opened up about her varied professional experiences covering multiple decades and memorable characters.

Andor's Powerful Speech

When discussing her memorable eulogy scene in the Disney+ show Andor, Shaw revealed that the initial version contained more explicit wording. "I did say a distinct term in my speech," she clarified, "while the screenwriter wanted the studio would accept it."

The actress described the unique filming conditions for that particular scene. "While I delivered that speech, I was recorded with about 200 cameras for making a hologram. I was entirely by myself in a massive studio, with neither director or production team there with me."

Jane Austen Adaptations

Speaking about the forthcoming screen version of Jane Austen's classic novel, Shaw expressed excitement about the completed filming. "We've just finished shooting it," she mentioned, "though performers typically doesn't see is the final film."

She praised filmmaker Georgia Oakley as "really lovely and quite confident." The production took place in beautiful estates across the UK, including locations in Dorset, Knebworth, and Devonshire.

Shaw also reflected on her previous role in the 1995 adaptation of Persuasion, playing Mrs. Croft. "Our filmmaker had particular demands: without hairpieces and only candlelight," she remembered. "He genuinely wanted to capture the experience of early 19th century life."

Harry Potter Memories

When asked about her experience with the wizarding film series, Shaw talked warmly about collaborating with the late Richard Griffiths. "Richard was the most refined, artistic and gifted man," she shared. "He possessed the most beautiful penmanship and on one occasion mailed me a note asking to lunch in elaborate gothic lettering."

The actress portrayed Griffiths as constantly speaking and telling interesting stories with herself and the young actors on set. "He had remarkable worldly understanding so we would sit enthralled to his stories."

Theatrical Work

Talking about her Broadway performance in Medea, Shaw recalled how emotionally demanding the show was. "I met one of the chorus members several years after, who said: 'I'm not over it yet,'" she disclosed.

The production continued for years, starting in Dublin, then traveling to England, followed by the American capital, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and ultimately Manhattan. "We grew very close as a cast," she added.

Performance Philosophy

When questioned about her ability to transition between humor and seriousness, Shaw explained that "comedy connects us as it's about rupturing the norm." Nevertheless, she confessed that "prior to a comedy, I always sleep poorly, because you have to find the rhythm on the day."

Regarding her method for approaching various roles, Shaw stated: "I find them all challenging. But even if the character you're portraying is rather different from you, there is frequently some aspect about them that you identify with."

Current Projects

Speaking about her latest role in Hot Milk, Shaw described her character Rose as "a difficult person but you can't play anything from that viewpoint." The actress elaborated that Rose experiences a functional neurological disorder that makes walking difficult.

"She is unaware of the impact she has on her daughter," Shaw noted. "Her only concern is that she wants to improve. She's well-intentioned yet unaware. Maybe this represents what many people resemble."

Personal Reflections

When told that viewers consider her ideal as authority figure characters, Shaw responded with humor: "Oh dear! I'm so not scary. But maybe when infused with purpose, my features can appear threatening."

The actress continued: "In reality occasionally rather disorganized so maybe it's redemptive for me to play very intelligent, organized characters. I try to depict fascinating individuals so I avoid criticizing them. Don't be scared – approach and greet me!"

Passion for Words

Discussing her renowned performance of T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land, Shaw conveyed her profound relationship with language and poetry. "My heart is always in the language," she stated, "since the indicators to everything are there in the choice of words."

The actress thinks that "poetry represents the polished form of language, or the moment that has been captured." As individuals reduce to what they genuinely wish to express, it's frequently lyrical."

Voice Recording

Concerning her acclaimed audiobook performances, particularly the classic Alice in Wonderland, Shaw revealed that "I enjoyed recording Alice in Wonderland because I incorporated everybody I knew into it – my friends and other actors."

She described how she performed the caterpillar as channeling Alan Rickman, and characterized the Red Queen evoking Geraldine McEwan. "It consistently feels a honor to sit and speak literature," she concluded, "though it requires extended periods of work."

Collaborating with the Director

Recalling her experience working with celebrated filmmaker Terrence Malick on his film Tree of Life, Shaw portrayed him as distinctive. "All that the director expresses and undertakes is different," she noted.

She shared a specific recollection of their first meeting: "He left a message on my answering machine which said, 'I wonder, would you come and help with my film?' We went out for breakfast. He said, 'Well, what are you going to have?' I said, 'I'm going to have scrambled eggs.' He said, 'I think I'll have scrambled eggs too,' like it was the most unusual selection in the world."

Shaw also mentioned Malick's unusual approach of asking actors "Do you want to do this scene indoors or outdoors?" – inquiries seldom made by other filmmakers. "He only employed natural light," she added, "so you could either perform interior near glass or exterior on location."

Concerning the extensive editing process, Shaw disclosed that "He takes approximately three years to complete the movie. I had been told by the producer after two years that I was probably one of the primary roles, but when the film came out, I was mostly removed."

She concluded by characterizing Malick's distinctive approach: "He constructs this enormous structure, and he removes most elements. He fundamentally dismantles films."
