The East African nation Receives Valuable Treasures Following a 100-Year Residence in a German Family
A total of 12 historical objects have been formally returned to the Ethiopian nation following being kept by a family in Germany for over 100 years.
These items, initially gathered in the 1920's by Germany's then-envoy to the Ethiopian empire Franz Weiss and his spouse Hedwig, were transferred on this past Wednesday to the Institute of Ethiopian Studies at the university in Addis Ababa.
The collection contained crowns, armor and canvases, each regarded as historically valuable in Ethiopia.
"The treasures continue to represent a mark of the long-standing and amicable ties between Germany and Ethiopia," remarked Germany's envoy, the envoy to Ethiopia.
Dr. a professor, whose father was delivered during the family's service in Ethiopia, delivered the objects at a event attended by Tourism Minister the tourism official.
He said that the family's intention to return the items was to "display their appeal with the public and maintain the heritage and past tied to my father's origin."
The objects were either considered presents or acquisitions, based on the relatives.
"I would like to express gratitude to the Weiss family for actively demonstrating their sincere affection for the nation by diligently safeguarding these artifacts and vitally securing their homecoming to their proper country," stated the minister of tourism.
She added that the artefacts would soon be made accessible to the people for research and educational purposes, describing the move a significant step in protecting the nation's cultural heritage.
"Actions persist to bring back ancient objects that are found in the custody of collectors and entities all over the globe," the minister said.
In the era of colonialism in the African continent, numerous of cultural objects were looted.
This request by nations in Africa for the repatriation of taken items has been responded to by certain progress in lately - even if a number of artefacts are just on loan.
In two years ago, the German government was the initial country to return some of the well-known Benin Bronzes to the West African nation in a bid to deal with its "troubled legacy."
