The Porcine Pardon: Hog Named Six Seven Spared by Miami Dade County Leader.
While perhaps not at the same level as sparing festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor experienced a presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued from the start of the onset of a current administration.
“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “Let this swine have a prosperous future free from concern.”
The gathering, which both honors and questions the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was christened after the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “6-7” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The craze became so ubiquitous that a major dictionary recently made “6-7” its top term for the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The pig pardon has become a cherished method to kick off the holiday season,” said the event host, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It embodies the spirit of Miami: happy, varied, and based in heritage that unite the community. Annually, we are proud to celebrate heritage and mercy in a way only Miami can.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach fritters and cafecito as they celebrated the swine's new lease on life.
