A comprehensive search and rescue effort is actively in progress in the Caribbean region for a pair of lost sailing vessels transporting aid cargo journeying from Mexico to Havana.

Maritime Search and Rescue Efforts Deployed

Mexico has deployed navy personnel and reconnaissance aircraft to find the two vessels, which were had on board at least nine crew members, per a navy statement.

The ships had been expected to reach Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no confirmation of their safe arrival, the navy said.

The Situation of Humanitarian Support to Cuba

Cuba has leaned on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the nation struggles through multiple nationwide blackouts.

"Both crews and captains are veteran seafarers, and the two ships are fitted with proper safety equipment and signalling equipment," an official for the convoy commented.

The nine-person crew are from France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with coast guard agencies from the involved countries along with their embassy officials.

"Our team is working closely with the authorities and continue to be hopeful in the ability of the crews to reach Havana safely," the spokesperson added.

Recent Humanitarian Mission

Just days before, the Cuban authorities warmly welcomed and officially received another boat that had carried 14 tonnes of relief supplies to the island.

That vessel, dubbed "Granma 2.0" in reference to the vessel in which Fidel Castro landed in Cuba to begin the revolution in the 1950s, carried photovoltaic panels, medicines, infant formula, bikes and provisions.

Broader Political Climate

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have been at the forefront of initiatives to deliver essential supplies to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a oil sanctions on the country was initiated.

Global bodies have since raised alarms about "dire" supply shortages, with over fifty thousand surgeries postponed in Cuba due to electricity supply constraints.

Foreign policy measures have intensified lately, with remarks from various officials underscoring the complicated state of relations.

Reacting to previous statements, a prominent government figure insisted that "the political system of Cuba is non-negotiable."

Reports suggest that preliminary steps of talks had begun, although their current progress remains not publicly known.

The maritime authorities stated it was committed to using all of the resources at its disposal to locate the sailboats and secure the well-being of the crews.

As of now, there has been silence on the lost ships by the Cuban leadership.
