Unbowed Nancy does not fear the sack yet supporters show anger after derby defeat.
The Celtic boss declared he did not fear dismissal, asserting, “The team is extremely close to things turning around,” even after moving dangerously close to the exit with a comprehensive setback against their arch-rivals.
A Second-Half Meltdown Leads to Derby Defeat
The Hoops had led Rangers at the interval but a second-half capitulation let the Gers to draw level on points with the reigning Scottish Premiership champions. The former MLS manager, who was hired in December, has now presided over six defeats in his last eight matches.
“The board and I are united with the board,” insisted the manager.
Asked directly about the speculation, Nancy replied: “It’s not on my mind. I concentrate on finding ways to get the team to excel on small moments.
Supporters' Anger On Display
Celtic’s support displayed their anger – towards the board and manager – by protesting at Parkhead. The board would be most likely to re-appoint Martin O’Neill, who enjoyed a successful interim spell previously, should a change be made.
“It’s the results [that leads to pressure]. That is the reality for the moment. However when I say that’s how it is, I am not saying that I am pessimistic. No. The message is we are on the cusp, really, really close to reverse our form.”
Focus on the Details
He remains focused on the fact his team can perform strongly for a half at a time. Indeed, if not for poor finishing they might have been better than 1-0 up. “There were positives except the fact that we didn't take a second goal,” he said. “I know that we lost, but I have also to be balanced.
“The level we had at certain moments was really, really, really high. This is the reality. I could not say that if it was different. But that’s why, when it comes to wins, I said it's a repeating pattern. Which is why I said that we are nearly there to things turning around. But for the moment: the fine margins.”
“I saw plenty of positives that we did, once more. The issue now it’s about performing for 90 minutes. My message would be different if it was not the case. Therefore I am convinced the team can to turn things around.”
The Rangers Boss Response
Danny Röhl refused to contemplate a serious challenge even after what appeared to be a landmark win. “We take it game by game, and we can gradually build a challenge,” he said. “The confidence in the squad is immense.”
